Neck pain is one of the most common sources of chronic pain alongside lower back pain, severe headaches and migraines.

The neck muscles can be strained  by poor posture — whether it’s leaning over your computer or looking down at your phone. Inflammation, or injury like whiplash can cause neck pain or stiffness. Ongoing tension can cause headaches.

Acupuncture has been recommended as a first-line treatment option for neck pain and stiffness by recent chronic pain guidelines.

Neck pain can wear you down

Neck pain has a way of creeping into every part of your life. Driving becomes a strain, sleep is constantly interrupted, and even simple movements feel stiff and restricted. Often, the pain doesn’t stay local—it spreads into the shoulders or triggers debilitating headaches.

Whether it’s the result of long hours at a desk (‘tech-neck’), chronic stress, an old injury, or whiplash, we focus on the root cause. At Vitalis, we use a combination of acupuncture and hands-on treatment to settle muscle tension and restore ease of movement.

Acupuncture for neck pain is more effective than drugs and physical therapy

A landmark study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (and featured in Time and Reuters) highlighted a significant shift in how we view neck pain treatment.

The study followed 517 patients who had suffered from chronic neck pain for an average of six years and had seen little success with other methods. The results were compelling:

  • Long-term Relief: Participants reported a 30%+ reduction in pain 12 months after treatment.
  • Outperforming Alternatives: Acupuncture was found to be more effective for long-term recovery than medication or traditional physical therapy alone.

How acupuncture may help

Acupuncture is commonly used for persistent neck pain because it can help in a few different ways at once:

  • reduce pain intensity
  • ease tight, overactive muscles
  • improve neck movement
  • reduce neck-related disability
  • help calm the cycle of tension and pain that often feeds headaches

A 2025 meta-analysis covering 26 trials and 3,520 participants found that acupuncture significantly reduced pain intensity compared with inert treatments. A systematic review also found moderate evidence that acupuncture performed better than some sham controls for chronic mechanical neck pain.

It’s not just about pain scores

What matters to most people is simple. Can I turn my head more easily? Can I work, sleep, and drive with less discomfort? Can I get through the day without constantly noticing my neck?

That’s where the research gets interesting.

A large multicentre trial involving 896 patients with cervical spondylosis-related neck pain found that acupuncture improved Northwick Park Neck Pain Questionnaire scores at 4 weeks compared with both shallow acupuncture and sham acupuncture, with benefits still present at 16 weeks. Another trial found acupuncture improved neck-related disability at 12 months versus usual care, with a 32% reduction from baseline in NPQ score.

“No other single treatment [but Acupuncture and Alexander Technique] is known to provide long-term benefits”

Long-term relief

One of the frustrations with neck pain is that relief can be short-lived. You feel better for a day or two after a treatment, then it comes straight back.

Long-term effects of acupuncture have been shown in a few studies. For instance, Norwegian office workers who suffered from chronic neck pain and headaches experienced benefits of acupuncture for 3 years following a course of treatment.

Acupuncture provided a long lasting pain relief in another study from Germany. Researchers recruited 14,161 people with neck pain. Their pain lasted at least six months prior to the study. Half of them received up to 15 acupuncture sessions over three months.  Many of them had a significant relief and most importantly treatment success was essentially maintained for at least six months.

A 2024 systematic review of 18 trials found that when acupuncture was used as an adjunct treatment for chronic neck pain, pain relief was still present at 3 months after treatment, and some studies also showed benefit at 6 months. The same review found sustained improvement in function for more than 3 months.

Some neck pain sufferers put up with it and continue taking anti-inflammatory drugs. Others resort to more radical and invasive steroid injections. These pharmacological options can have significant side-effects and adverse events. Studies have shown that acupuncture can provide a great alternative to this, because benefits of it can last, making it a great option for those seeking a long-term relief from neck pain and headaches.

Our approach at Dr Vitalis Acupuncture

We take neck pain seriously because it rarely exists on its own. Often there’s a pattern behind it. Tight upper trapezius muscles. A guarded jaw. Desk posture. Stress. Poor sleep. A headache history. Sometimes an old injury that never quite settled.

Your treatment is tailored to what’s driving the problem for you. Depending on your presentation, your care may include:

  • Targeted Acupuncture to reduce inflammation, improve range of motion and desensitise pain signalling.
  • Gentle Soft Tissue Work: To release stubborn muscle guarding.
  • Integrated Care: Treatment for associated headaches or migraines.

The aim is not simply to chase symptoms for a day or two. It’s to help your neck settle, move better, and stay calmer over time.

Neck pain and headaches often travel together

Neck pain and neck injuries often lead to headaches and migraines. Tight and irritated structures in the neck can contribute to headache patterns, especially when the neck has been stiff or overloaded for a while.

When this is part of your picture, we treat both the neck pain and the associated muscle tension and movement restriction that may be feeding the headaches.
